WVBA Announces 2018 Excellence in Broadcasting Award Winners; Honors Mike Kirtner

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — The West Virginia Broadcasters Association (WVBA) announced the winners of the 2018 Excellence in Broadcasting Awards, recognizing outstanding work in television, radio, and network broadcasting across the state.

This year’s ceremony honored Mike Kirtner of Huntington with the Mel Burka Distinguished Broadcaster Award, celebrating his long-standing leadership and contributions to West Virginia media. WDGG 93.7 THE DAWG was named Legendary Station of the Year, and WCHS-TV earned Best Television Station of the Year. The John McKinney Excellence in Technology Award was presented to Bob Hardman of WBOY-TV.

Digital Disruption: Challenges & OPPORTUNITIES For Broadcasters 

All broadcasters are facing disruption on many fronts. The way that listeners and viewers consume content is going through major changes. The country is undergoing a massive generational shift. Social media opens up a new way to communicate and connect. Smartphones have rapidly become a significant way to consume media. Ratings companiesarehavingtroublekeepingupandmeasuringuse. Andtheadvertisingmodelis changing, as clients are facing an avalanche of new options and ways of determining a successful return on their investment.

This creates many challenges for broadcasters, from which digital channels to invest in, to training sellers on how to adequately monetize them. But it also creates opportunities, as broadcasters have more tools than ever to reach audience and deliver them to their clients.

Media specialist Paul Jacobs from Jacobs Media will help West Virginia broadcasters sort through the noise in a fast-paced presentation, which will cover the following issues utilizing real-world examples, research and stories from the field:

  • What are “radio” and “television” in a digital world where cord-cutting and on-demand content is proliferating?

  • Using digital advertising solutions as a critical partner to traditional advertising solutions.

  • Examples of revenue-generating solutions utilizing social media, mobile, web, database

  • Understanding what “content” is and how it can be re-purposed for revenue generation.

  • Positioning the advantage of being a local broadcaster in a digital world.

  • A video interview with the head of dealer co-op from Ford, as he explains why he is pushing so many dollars into digital, and what he recommends broadcasters should do.

Paul is the Vice-President, General Manager of Jacobs Media, a research and consulting company based in Detroit. For the past three decades, he has worked with broadcasters on developing revenue solutions based on adjusting to new opportunities and challenges. He began his career in radio sales, and was a General Manager of stations in Dallas and Detroit prior to joining Jacobs Media in 1991. He is also the President of jacapps, one of the largest developers of mobile applications for media, so he understands not only the broadcast business, but the digital business as well.

Radio Division

The WVBA radio awards are divided into two market size categories - RANKED and UNRANKED.

RANKED include all stations licensed to designated Metro Counties of any Neilson rated radio market. In West Virginia those include (1) Wheeling, (2) Parkersburg, (3) Huntington, (4) Charleston, (5) Morgantown-Fairmont- Clarksburg, (6) Beckley and (7) Bluefield. All stations whose city of license does not fall into a metro county of the seven rated markets compete in the UNRANKED category.

Radio Station of the Year Categories

Country: Any station that plays any form of country music including bluegrass, classic country and/or modern mainstream country.

CHR: Contemporary Hit Radio—both pop and rhythmic—hip-hop, rap and straight top forty radio.

AC/Oldies: All types of adult contemporary radio— including both hot and soft AC—as well as AAA, smooth jazz, contemporary Christian and oldies based formats other than rock and country—including 60’s oldies, music of your life, adult standards, classic hits, 70’s and 80’s oldies.

Rock: All genres of the rock format including classic rock, active rock, mainstream rock or alternative.

News/Talk/Sports: All stations that have a spoken word format such as all news, all talk and all sports—or a combination of news, sports and talk.

A station entrant must submit a document, maximum 250- words, that describes what the station has accomplished in audience ratings (if available), community involvement, promotions and public service. Submitter shall also provide an Mp3 file that does not exceed three-minutes in length along with an entry form.

Individual Radio Awards
Best Newscast: Best single, locally originated

newscast.

Best Sportscast: Best single, locally originated sportscast.

Best Play-by-Play: Submit only actual play-by-play highlights of a specific game, any sport...no interviews, halftime programs or production.

Best Talk Show: Best single, locally originated talk show.

Best Morning Show: This can be an individual or an ensemble that appears on the radio regularly between 5AM and 10AM. Can be one single show or a compilation
